One Sheep was lost. The Shepherd would carefully secure the 99 in the safety of his sheepfold. Then, through the inclement weather, whether blistering heat, freezing snow, or a blinding rainstorm, He would set out on his treacherous journey to find the ONE.
The Shepherd understood the dangers of being lost in a world of predators and precipices and storms that swallowed up anything in their path. His heart ached for the safe return of the ONE. It meant that he must care about something more than himself, more than his own safety, more than his own well-being. He would be laying His own life on the line in a desperate attempt to save the ONE.
We, as God’s People, must step out of our comfort zone and reach out to the “ONEs” that God has placed all around us that need saving. Through personal inconvenience, frequent disappointment and great sacrifice we have an eternal responsibility to the “ONE.” The Good Shepherd expects no less of us than He did of Himself.
